Tuscarawas Arts Support Grant program makes initial awards

The Times-Reporter

Tuscarawas Arts Partnership (TAP) is excited to announce the recipients of the first Tuscarawas Arts Support Grant, which was established to provide additional funding support for arts-based projects and programs within Tuscarawas County. Several local organizations applied and were awarded funding from the Tuscarawas Arts Support Grant.

The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum was awarded $500 for its project “Dennison World War II Poster Mural Project: A Downtown Beautification Project.” The project will include 10 World War II wartime poster-size murals for the next phase of the downtown beautification project this spring, summer, and fall.

“We’re very excited about this,” said Wendy Zucal, executive director of the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum. “We are expanding on our downtown beautification project with a WWII- 940s theme to recreate WWII posters.

“We have always wanted to paint murals, but large murals are very expensive. So we decided to recreate these poster-sized murals that are more manageable and that fit perfectly with our theme.”

Zucal said the project is already underway with four murals completed, featuring such posters as Rosie the Riveter and Uncle Sam. Depot personnel have worked with area artist Teresa Prince and plan to continue doing so. She will begin painting more murals this month.

“Our goal is 10 to 15 murals,” Zucal said. “Anyone interested in sponsoring a mural can contact me at the Depot. We plan to enhance the mural program with Walking Tours and Scavenger Hunts.”

ARTSNCT INC was awarded $500 for its project “Arts for All.” ARTSNCT INC plans to offer three performances of the play “Four Old Broads” at no cost to the Newcomerstown community and to all residents in the tri-county area, with an emphasis on serving low-income families, senior citizens and local veterans.

Funding for the Tuscarawas Arts Support Grant was made possible through TAP’s fundraising initiatives as well as corporate support and individual donations from the pARTners of TAP.

TAP’s mission is to create and support environments that awaken, empower, and inspire. TAP’s vision is to promote a visible, sustainable, local arts culture through advocacy, education, and funding. This can be accomplished by encouraging the arts to thrive across Tuscarawas County and encouraging partnerships between the arts with other art, business, and community agencies to create positive impact and benefits throughout the county.
